My thoughts of The Green Knight
An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur's reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.
I have to admit that I was a little skeptical about this film. I didn't think that Dev Patel could pull off the role and my expectations were low. That being said, I love movies with knights and chivalry so ...
Having seen the trailers, I had a pretty good idea of what to expect visually but I had no idea that Patel, and the entire cast, would pull off such solid performances. While I imagined Gawain to be a much younger man, Patel's version of Gawain was the best that I have ever seen.
The movie has this wonderful dreamlike/nightmare vibe as Gawain stumbles through his quests before finally learning the meaning of honor. The ending may have you scratching your head and going to the bookstore for a copy of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
I loved it and give it 5 stars out of 5.
Come thou, I charge thee, to the Green Chapel, such a stroke as thou hast dealt thou hast deserved, and it shall be promptly paid thee on New Year's morn. Many men know me as the knight of the Green Chapel, and if thou askest, thou shalt not fail to find me.
